BTW, I am not referring to Jan 1st here !! In Hindu system new year starts for us from Ugadi (Yugadi) that happened to be on March 16th.
This is the reason why Fiscal/Financial year starts from April 1st :) April maps to 'Chaitra' maasa (maasa is month in Kannada), first month of Hindu calendar.
